“You are the salt of the earth.” Mt. 5:13a

“You are the light of the world.” Mt. 5:14a

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

-Matthew 6:21 (NRSV)

This time last year, Chapel Hill youth and adult sponsors traveled to Houston, TX to put hands and hearts to work.  We kept our packing light, lived in community, and found ways to be in relationship with each other and the people we met.  Some circumstances were hospitable and well-organized while others were harder to navigate and tiresome.  We learned new skills, made new friends, and experienced the extraordinary grace and love of Jesus Christ.

A year later, though disappointed we don’t get to share such an experience this summer, we can give thanks for the good memories that we made and the opportunities to share the extraordinary grace and love we experienced.  Joy will sustain us—through the ups and downs.

At some time, every time will be a memory.  So, make it a good one!

Throughout your journey, keep your “carry-on” baggage light—as if you’re packing for a mission trip.  Collect more memories and less luggage.

You won’t miss the stuff—and the world will be blessed by more of YOU.

May the mercy and love of God be with you and fill you

today, this week and all the days to come.
