MISSIONS & OUTREACH

Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and will be repaid in full.”

Proverbs 19:17

OUR MISSION IN PLANEVIEW

Planeview was built during WWII as temporary housing for the influx of workers at Boeing. In 1955, Planeview became part of Wichita and is considered the most impoverished neighborhood of Wichita. In 2010, Chapel Hill chose Planeview as our local, long-term mission focus.

Our mission is to participate in efforts to eliminate poverty by helping to improve living conditions and restoring hope in the community. Chapel Hill volunteers are being the “hands and feet” of Jesus in the Planeview neighborhood by demonstrating God’s love for them.

SUPPORT FOR PLANEVIEW CHILDREN

Over the years, Chapel Hill has been actively supporting the children in Plainview in a number of ways. Colvin Elementary and Jardine Middle School welcome our volunteers to help tutor and mentor students by assisting in classrooms, tutoring children with their homework, or serving as a mentor by eating lunch with students. At the start of each school year, we celebrate Operation Backpack where we provide backpacks and school supplies to the children at Colvin and Jardine. Opportunities exist to contribute school supplies or monetary donations, help organize the supplies, and to help deliver the backpacks to the schools.

Each Christmas season, Chapel Hill has a Blessing Tree Program where we are given a list of children from Planeview whose only Christmas gift may be from Chapel Hill. In addition, we give each Jardine student a long sleeve shirt. Volunteers are needed to organize the event, be at the Blessing table each Sunday, purchase the gifts, and deliver gifts for the children.

At the end of each school year, Chapel Hill volunteers organize and play games with the children at Colvin, so their teachers are free to focus on end-of-year reports.

THE LORD’S DINER

When we inquired with the two public schools in Planeview about their greatest need they quickly said, “Hunger!”  We reached out to the Catholic Charities Board of Directors and Bishop Jackels of the Wichita Diocese to consider a Planeview location for the Lord’s Diner where a hot meal would be served 365 days a year.

They obliged our request at the request of Bishop Jackels and created the Planeview Lord’s Diner facility at 2825 S. Hillside. Chapel Hill provides on-going support at the Lord’s Diner by providing volunteers to serve the second Sunday of each month. Click the link below to see our volunteer opportunities.

PLANEVIEW NEIGHBORHOOD EVENTS

It is important that we not only support Planeview financially and volunteer behind the scenes, but we also interact in meaningful ways with the people in Planeview.  Annually Chapel Hill volunteers help the Planeview residents clean up the neighborhood at their Neighborhood Cleanup Day and we cook a meal for them at the Neighborhood Night Out.
