Hello Chapel Hill Families!

Doves and Fire and Wind, oh my! We had lot of fun learning about the Holy Spirit on Pentecost this week. Join us this Sunday as we learn about “Love in Action” (Romans 12:9-18)

REMINDER:  If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader that has a Deep Blue Bible, please help them remember to bring it with them to Sunday school each week! We don’t have many extras of that particular version at the church and they will be looking up and reading scripture every time they come to church from now on.

If you plan on attending in May, please sign your child up for Sunday School (9:30 ONLY) by clicking HERE. Nursery will be available at BOTH 9:30 and 11:00 services. If you need to change your sign-up, just click the same link to edit, or contact me. We will NOT have a sign-up for Sunday school through the summer months.

We are still in need of one leader to help assist with Sunday School on June 20th (Father’s Day) if you are available to help, please let me know!

VBS UPDATE

I am still in need of at least 15 more VBS leaders.  Leaders received the early child registration link last week. We will open to the public after Memorial Day. 45/200 child spots have already been secured by volunteers children. If you are only available part of the week, we still need you! Grandparents or older siblings are also welcome to help out. ALSO, we provide FREE childcare for volunteers’ kids 3 and under. The nursery will be providing an adapted version of our VBS activities for our littlest friends!

Join us for “Discovery on Adventure Island” VBS at Chapel Hill! We are so excited to gather together for this event this year. Child spaces will be limited to 200 and we will make some other adjustments due to the pandemic, but it is sure to be another great year of FUN learning and worshipping together! We have purchased materials that can be easily used in an online format if numbers show that it is not wise to meet in person. Children of volunteers will be the first to register. Celebrate Wonder is a Sunday school curriculum that engages children’s natural sense of curiosity to help them understand God’s love. It creates a safe environment for kids to ask big questions — helping them explore the Bible in ways that feed their imagination and encourages creativity. Through carefully-selected Bible stories, songs, videos, and hands-on activities, Celebrate Wonder gives children the tools to explore their faith while incorporating it into their daily lives.

Since we were not able to meet in person, I have been mailing Sunday School Kits to families each month with printed lesson plans, activity sheets and craft supplies. Since we will return to Sunday School in May, I will NOT be mailing these packets unless a request is sent to Abigail Deiter. We are happy to accommodate those who are still not able to join us in person.

Each month, our weekly stories will align with a Faith Word. The Faith Word for the month of May is, “Love”.

In today’s story, Paul explains what love should look like for both the church and others in the community. Paul calls for a sincere love without pretending. He says we should hate evil and cling to what is good. We should love one another like family. We also should show honor to one another. Paul says we should be enthusiastic in serving the Lord. We are to find happiness in hope and stand our ground when we are in trouble.

Paul also addresses how to deal with people who are different from us. We are to bless people who harass us, as Jesus taught, and not curse them. We are to treat one another as equals and not think of ourselves as better than anyone else. We are to befriend those who have no status and not have an inflated idea of our own intelligence. We are not to seek revenge on those who have wronged us, and we are to show respect for the beliefs of those who believe something different from us. Most importantly, we are to live in peace with everyone. We are called to love.

But love can be hard. It might seem impossible to demonstrate this kind of love. How can we possibly always be loving? This story shows many ways to love. We can’t always show perfect love, but we can choose one way we will offer our very best love. Love is not about perfection. Love is a practice. Help children see ways they can practice being a person of love and how to share that love with others. The main point you’ll want your children to take away is that “we want to seek to” live in peace with everyone.

This week take time to reflect on your relationships. Are you loving others the best you can? Are there people with whom you desire to connect in a more loving way? Are there people with whom you have an ongoing conflict that could be resolved by choosing a more loving approach? Are you ready to take action in these situations? If so, choose a first step. If not, talk to God about it in prayer until you’re ready. And remember, sometimes choosing the loving way can also mean setting boundaries and asking God to show you the most loving way forward.
