Hello Chapel Hill Families!

This past Sunday, we kicked off our Summer with a new Faith Word and Memory Verse to guide us through the month of June. All the Bible stories this month will be focused on the word, “PEACE”.

• June 6th “Abraham and Lot” (Genesis 13)
• June 13th “David & Abigail” (1 Samuel 25:1-42)
• June 20th “Be Peaceful” (Psalm 23)
• June 27th “Peacemakers” (Matthew 5:1-12)

As a reminder, kids will now attend their Sunday School classes according to their grade level for next year. Here are the room assignments for the summer:

• Birth-Prekindergarten: Nursery in Fellowship Hall
• Kindergarten & 1st Grade: LL-31 in Children’s Wing
• 2nd & 3rd Grade: LL29 in Children’s Wing
• 4th & 5th Grade: LL-32 in Children’s Wing
• 6th-8th Grade: LL-4
• 9th-12th Grade: LL-6

REMINDER:  If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader that has a Deep Blue Bible, please help them remember to bring it with them to Sunday school each week! We don’t have many extras of that particular version at the church and they will be looking up and reading scripture every time they come to church from now on.

We will not have sign-ups for 9:30 Sunday School during the Summer due to lower attendance. Come when you can! Nursery will be available at BOTH 9:30 and 11:00 services. No Sunday School at 11:00. We have clipboards outside the sanctuary available for kids attending worship.

VBS UPDATE

126/200 child spots have been filled! Our K-1st Grade group is almost completely full. Once the group fills, we will begin a wait list. I will do my best to find a way to get everyone in. Deadline to register your kids is July 1st. Please register your child TODAY!

I am still in need of at least 5 more VBS Group Guides.  Group Guides check kids in, learn their names, takes them from one station to another, and checks them out to their parents at pick up time. I also have some station assistant positions available as well.  If you are only available part of the week, we still need you! Grandparents or older siblings are also welcome to help out. ALSO, we provide FREE childcare for volunteers’ kids 3 and under. The nursery will be providing an adapted version of our VBS activities for our littlest friends!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR OUR CHRISTMAS EVE PERFORMANCE!

We are looking for children to fill the following roles:

• Sheep (Preschool-Kindergarten Aged)
• Angels (1st-3rd Grade)
• Shepherds (4th & 5th Grade)

Rehearsals will be Sunday afternoons 4:00-6:00PM December 5th, 12th, and 19th. Christmas Eve services will be 1:00, 3:00, and 5:00 this year. Please contact me if your children are interested in participating. I am so excited for this new Chapel Hill tradition!

Join us for “Discovery on Adventure Island” VBS at Chapel Hill! We are so excited to gather together for this event this year. Child spaces will be limited to 200 and we will make some other adjustments due to the pandemic, but it is sure to be another great year of FUN learning and worshipping together! We have purchased materials that can be easily used in an online format if numbers show that it is not wise to meet in person. Children of volunteers will be the first to register. Celebrate Wonder is a Sunday school curriculum that engages children’s natural sense of curiosity to help them understand God’s love. It creates a safe environment for kids to ask big questions — helping them explore the Bible in ways that feed their imagination and encourages creativity. Through carefully-selected Bible stories, songs, videos, and hands-on activities, Celebrate Wonder gives children the tools to explore their faith while incorporating it into their daily lives.

Each month, our weekly stories will align with a Faith Word. The Faith Word for the month of June is, “Peace”.

In our Bible story, Abigail serves as a peacekeeper when a conflict breaks out. Abigail’s wealthy husband, Nabal, is shearing his sheep. There is a man named David, who protected Nabal’s shepherds while they were in the wilderness with their sheep. David sends word to Nabal asking for food for his men in exchange. Nabal refuses. This upsets David and his men, so they prepare to fight.

It is interesting to note that verse 6 says David instructs his men to greet Nabal with words of peace: “Say this to him: ‘Peace to you, your household, and all that is yours!’ ” So, the interaction between Nabal and David starts with peace; however, conflict still arises.

When Abigail learns what has happened, she quickly gathers supplies and food for David and his men. She then finds David and apologizes on behalf of her husband. Peace is established, and David praises Abigail for her good judgment. Abigail returns home. Nabal dies about ten days later, and then David and Abigail marry.

This story demonstrates the importance of peacekeeping efforts and de-escalating conflicts. The story provides an example of what not to do if our gestures of peace are met in unfriendly ways, as David’s were by Nabal. Children are able to see ways to help create peace and opportunities to explore applicable ways to be peacekeepers in their own lives.

This week, take time to make peace in your home. Try these things:
• Set up a quiet reflective area.
• Make a list of ways you can be a peacemaker to others, such as giving or serving at church or in your community.|
• Make a quiet hour. Turn off electronics and other noises, and take time to be together as a family, to do a devotional, or to say a prayer.
