Hello Chapel Hill Families!

I had so much fun being in fellowship with members of our church family at our first Summer @ the Hill “Outdoor Game Night” a couple of weeks ago. Please join us for our second Summer @ the Hill event this Sunday from 6:30-7:30PM. We will have live music, campfire and s’mores for all. Bring your own blanket or chairs for seating. I hope to see you there!

This week, we will be hearing the Bible story on the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount which includes our memory verse for this month “Happy are people who make peace, because they will be called God’s children.” (Matthew 5:9). I hope you will join us for our last week learning about PEACE!

We will not have sign-ups for 9:30 Sunday School during the Summer due to lower attendance. Come when you can! Nursery will be available at BOTH 9:30 and 11:00 services. No Sunday School at 11:00. We have clipboards outside the sanctuary available for kids attending worship.

Kids will now attend their Sunday School classes according to their grade level for next year. Here are the room assignments for the summer:

  • Birth-Prekindergarten: Nursery in Fellowship Hall
  • Kindergarten & 1st Grade: LL-31 in Children’s Wing
  • 2nd & 3rd Grade: LL29 in Children’s Wing
  • 4th & 5th Grade: LL-32 in Children’s Wing

REMINDER:  If you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader that has a Deep Blue Bible, please help them remember to bring it with them to Sunday school each week! We don’t have many extras of that particular version at the church and they will be looking up and reading scripture every time they come to church from now on.

Vacation Bible School 2021 “Discovery on Adventure Island”

Join us for “Discovery on Adventure Island” VBS at Chapel Hill! We are so excited to gather together for this event this year. Child spaces will be limited to 200 and we will make some other adjustments due to the pandemic, but it is sure to be another great year of FUN learning and worshipping together! We have purchased materials that can be easily used in an online format if numbers show that it is not wise to meet in person. Children of volunteers will be the first to register. Celebrate Wonder is a Sunday school curriculum that engages children’s natural sense of curiosity to help them understand God’s love. It creates a safe environment for kids to ask big questions — helping them explore the Bible in ways that feed their imagination and encourages creativity. Through carefully-selected Bible stories, songs, videos, and hands-on activities, Celebrate Wonder gives children the tools to explore their faith while incorporating it into their daily lives.

May Faith Word

Each month, our weekly stories will align with a Faith Word. The Faith Word for the month of June is, “Peace”.

Bible Story Preview

This week’s Bible story commonly is known as the Beatitudes and is part of a passage of Scripture that is called the Sermon on the Mount. As word of Jesus’ ministry spread, large crowds began to follow him. Jesus took time away from the crowds and went up a mountain with his disciples. The Sermon on the Mount is a series of teachings by Jesus that helps us know how God wants us to live. It also contains familiar passages such as the Lord’s Prayer and the Golden Rule.

The Beatitudes are presented in a series of statements that, in the Common English Bible, begin with the words “Happy are people.” Some of these statements can be confusing for children—and adults—because many of the people Jesus names as “happy” are not people we typically think of as experiencing happiness.

So, what does it mean that people who would normally be thought of as unfortunate are described as happy in Jesus’ teachings? These teachings remind us that there is hope in all circumstances through God.

The Beatitudes can take time to grasp fully, but they often are better understood as children grow up. However, most children can comprehend being a peacemaker. We are not always happy, but we can still spread God’s peace. As children learn and grow, they will be exposed to situations in which they must learn to interact and get along with people within their community who think and act differently than them. We are called “God’s children” because we work for peace, just as God does. This practice brings joy and happiness.

Spiritual Practice for Adults

Draw lines to divide a piece of paper into three parts. In the first part, list things that make you happy. In the last part, list things that make you sad. Draw a heart in the middle part, and write the word “hope” in the heart. As you pray this week, consider both the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. Then thank God for hope, because God provides opportunity for hope no matter what the situation, and hope leads back to happiness.
