Join Us In Doing Justice
2025 Justice Together NEHEMIAH ASSEMBLY
May 8th at 6:00 PM
WSU Eugene M. Hughes Metroplex
5015 E 29th St. N., Wichita
You’ve been hearing about Justice Together recently and it’s important that you know about this valuable ministry. Chapel Hill is one of 39 local congregations that make up JT, answering the call to work for justice in Sedgwick County. One person or even one faith community can’t change a whole system, but by putting our voices together, we have a voice so big that it can’t be ignored. Justice Together takes its inspiration from scripture in Nehemiah chapter 5, where Nehemiah gathers a great crowd to demand justice for the oppressed in his community. This year JT is calling for broad-scale improvements to local systems that will improve the lives of people struggling to find affordable housing and those seeking a way out of homelessness. But this strategy won’t work unless a host of people come to this event. Hundreds of people gather at Chapel Hill for worship on Sunday mornings 52 weeks a year. It is our dream that the same number of people from our church would be willing to join Justice Together for just one event during the year – the Nehemiah Assembly tomorrow night. Please consider joining us and standing together for those struggling to find housing in our community.
The specific issues we are confronting this year:
AFFORDABLE HOUSING – Wichita lacks 50,000 housing units (of all kinds), leaving many people without a safe, affordable housing option. Over 11,000 low-income individuals spend more than half their income on housing, while new housing developments often prioritize luxury over affordability. We need reliable funding for affordable housing development and rehabilitation in our community. Our friends and neighbors deserve it.
HOMELESSNESS – Last year at our first Nehemiah Assembly, City and County officials committed to developing a low-barrier I-9 eligible ID program and to plan for a full funding approach for the upcoming Multi-Agency Center (MAC). The City of Wichita has come through for us, committing $500,000 annually for the MAC and is in the process of implementing a new free ID, but Sedgwick County has yet to take action toward either goal. It is time for the county to step up to address this crisis for our homeless brothers and sisters.
