Farewell 5th Graders! Welcome to CH Youth!
Jesus often used stories when he was teaching. Many of the stories Jesus told are parables – stories used specifically to teach a lesson. Occasionally, Jesus would explain the meaning of the parables he told to his disciples. More often, Jesus told these stories without an explanation. The work of figuring out what Jesus meant is left to us.
The parable of the wise and foolish builders is presented in Matthew as part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The story is found in a similar form in the Gospel of Luke. Jesus told of two builders that each built a house. One builder built his house on rock and the other builder chose to build his house on sand. And then the rains came. Those who listened to Jesus’ story originally would have been familiar with the conditions of desert areas that are dry in summer but flood in winter. Houses built on the sand in this area would only last until the heavy rains flooded the area.
The parable Jesus told about the wise and foolish builders illustrates that wisdom is more than knowledge. In the parable, the wise builder built a house upon rock, while the foolish builder built his house on sand. When it rained heavily and the floods came, the house on the sand washed away while the house on the rock remained. Both builders had certainly encountered sand and rock and were aware of the properties of each. The wise builder used his knowledge to make a good decision. Wisdom is using what you know to make good decisions.
Jesus’ explained that those who hear his words and follow them are like the wise builder. Those who hear Jesus’ teachings and ignore them are like the foolish builder. Each person who hears Jesus’ teachings has the same knowledge, but may or may not choose to use that knowledge with wisdom.

While I was looking for all the new material to share with you about our new unit, I stumbled across this app. I downloaded it for free, and it has all the videos to go along with the Bible story each week. There is a trivia game, a fun scripture game and another maze game that reinforced the verse of the month. It isn’t anything fancy, but I thought I would share if you were looking for new ways to engage your kids with our weekly Bible stories at home. GET IT HERE
