Hello Chapel Hill Families!

I had so much fun at Trunk or Treat on Sunday! So thankful for all of the people who donated candy, decorated a trunk, the youth who facilitated the games, and all who attended. I was expecting a lot less participation this year, but was pleasantly surprised with the turnout. Thanks be to God for the sunshine, calmer winds, and warmer temperatures. I was a little worried after church until the clouds literally parted for us right before the event!

In Sunday School this week we will watch “Prince of Egypt” during Sunday School at 9:30 to review this month’s stories. All kids will gather in LL-30-32 on this day except for 3rd Grade Bible class who will meet in their regular room.

KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES: Please double check which class you are checking your kindergartener in on Sundays. For some reason, the system keeps defaulting them to Pre-K and they are not showing up on our kindergarten room rosters Sunday morning. We have moved them to kindergarten and deleted them from Pre-K, but it continues to happen. If you need help changing the class, Laura, Ryan , or I can help you with that. Thanks for your assistance with this issue!

Friday, October 1st was Neema’s birthday! We sponsor Neema and her cousin, Kikwete, who live in the Angel House Orphanage in Tanzania, Africa. We have pledged to give $90/month in order to provide food, clothing and schooling to these children at Angel House. Each Sunday, kids have the opportunity to bring money to put into our offering for Neema and Kikwete. Would you help us meet our goal by sending your child with $1.00 each week? Our kids did such a good job remembering to bring their offering this past week! Our former Director of Children’s Ministries, Raegan Brane, has visited Angel House in the past. You can find out more information about the Grassroots Organization and Angel House by clicking HERE.

Celebrate Wonder is a Sunday school curriculum that engages children’s natural sense of curiosity to help them understand God’s love. It creates a safe environment for kids to ask big questions — helping them explore the Bible in ways that feed their imagination and encourages creativity. Through carefully-selected Bible stories, songs, videos, and hands-on activities, Celebrate Wonder gives children the tools to explore their faith while incorporating it into their daily lives.

October Faith Word

Each month, our weekly stories will align with a Faith Word. The Faith Word for the month of October is, “Awe”.

October Memory Verse

Bible Story Preview

God acted in awesome ways to deliver the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Moses was saved by the pharaoh’s daughter and grew into adulthood, with all the privileges of the pharaoh’s family. Amazingly, God called Moses from a burning bush and sent him back to Egypt to free God’s people. Eventually, God’s powerful acts convinced the pharaoh to let the Israelites go. To ensure the people got out of Egypt safely, God performed another awe inspiring act by parting the Reed Sea. The people believed God was with them, and it was time to celebrate!

Miriam, the sister of Moses, led the people in song and dance to celebrate their freedom. Miriam and her song, “Sing to the Lord”, was a song of praise and a song of remembrance. God wants the people to remember the any ways God cares for God’s people. The spiritual practice for this unit is exploring awe through gratitude. This Bible story is one of gratitude. Gratitude is not always shown in wild celebration. Remind the children that gratitude can also be expressed through quiet prayer and silent reflection.

Spiritual Practice for Adults

Find a comfortable place to sit and close your eyes. Imagine you have just walked through a sea that God parted for you. Imagine you are on the other side of the sea and no longer in slavery. For the first time in your life, you are free to worship the God of your ancestors. How would you choose to celebrate? How would you remember the amazing acts God performed for you? Praise God through song or prayer. Praise God for all the amazing ways God has delivered you safely from times of trouble.
