Good and Beautiful Life 1920x1080This summer, we embark on an extended thematic exploration of popular theological works by Chapel Hill’s own pastor-in-residence, Dr. James Bryan Smith. A distinguished theologian and author, Smith is executive director of the Apprentice Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation at Friends University.

Good and Beautiful Sermon Series

This summer and fall, Senior Pastor Jeff Gannon will lead sermon series based on two of Smith’s recent books. We examine The Good and Beautiful Life: Putting on the Character of Christ (InterVarsity Press, 2009) from August through September. From October through November, we turn to  The Good and Beautiful Community: Following the Spirit, Extending Grace, Demonstrating Love (InterVarsity Press, 2010).

Guest Preaching by James Bryan Smith

In conjunction with these series, we welcome pastor-in-residence Smith back home to Chapel Hill on Sunday, September 10 to preach and sign his latest book. The Magnificent Story: Uncovering a Gospel of Beauty, Goodness and Truth (InterVarsity Press, 2017) is the first installment in a new three-volume “Magnificent” series published by InterVarsity.

Magnificent Zoe Study Groups

Together with these sermon series, Chapel Hill Zoe Groups, our adult ministry small groups, will meet weekly this fall to discuss, study, learn and pray together over Smith’s newest book,  The Magnificent Story: Uncovering a Gospel of Beauty, Goodness and Truth (InterVarsity Press, 2017). Apprentice Gathering, September 28 – 30

Finally, we encourage Chapel Hillers to attend a three-day discipleship workshop and spiritual formation retreat September 28-30. Organized by the Apprentice Institute for Christian Formation at Friends University, the Apprentice Gathering is an annual gathering of like-minded individuals on a journey into Christlikeness. Dr. James Bryan Smith presides over an incredible roster of presenters seeking to uncover a Gospel of beauty, goodness and truth. Learn more here.

The Good and Beautiful Life: Putting on the Character of Christ

Drawing from the above entitled book by Chapel Hill pastor-in-residence James Bryan Smith, this series expounds on the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew Chapters 5-7, Jesus preaches about what happens to a person who submits to his teaching and practices. When we do what Jesus invites, it leads to a good and beautiful life because we are putting on the character of Christ.
