We celebrate and salute those who are mothers and those who mother. We celebrate the beauty and gift of motherhood in all its complexity. We mourn and grieve with those for whom this day is painful. We celebrate with those for whom this day is nothing short of a miracle.
We give thanks that our God is a God of great possibility and God’s love knows no bounds. Happy Mother’s Day! May you be blessed today and everyday. We don’t know about you, but we need to stamp this on our forehead, put it up on our mirror, and make this our screensaver. God is the vine, we are the branches. We are not in the business of producing fruit thanks be to God. As Pastor Jeff preached so eloquently this morning- we have it in our heads that we need to try harder to be more loving, more kind, more joyful... instead, “Give up trying, and take up training.” Using the metaphor of the vineyard, he reminds us that the vine is long and prominent, and resilient, we, the branches need training not so that we may produce fruit but so that we may bear the fruit the vine produces. Amen? If you have not experienced the sermon yet, please do so as soon as possible that you may be blessed.
Consider John 15:1-8 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Thank you Jesus that apart from you I can do nothing. Thank you for the reminder that I don’t have to try harder to be more fruitful. You and You alone, Jesus, can produce the fruit of the spirit in my life. Jesus you are life. So, how is it with your soul today?

Do you believe that you are loved and accepted by God today just as you are?

I specify “today” because I can’t always answer ‘yes’ to that question. Part of the journey of faith for me has always been a battle between my ears over who gets to tell me who I am. So many of us have voices in our heads; maybe it’s our parents, maybe it’s our friends, maybe it’s our imagined self or someone else entirely. Maybe some of those messages are complicated.

Do you notice a connection between how you feel in your soul and full acceptance of yourself as you currently are? If you haven’t been told this good news in a while, let me be the one to remind you: God does not dislike you.

God made you and you are good.

God made you and God is good.

You are a beautiful, cherished, creation of the living God. God wants nothing more from you than to love you and be in relationship with you. Of course, you will grow, change, and get better as a result of that love. But today, as you are, be okay with who you are: loved and cherished by God.

This is our spiritual practice for the week: Close your eyes. Take notice of your breath. Connect your body to Spirit.

God, You are greater than our hearts
